Daily life in Romania - Journalism

When I came to Romania, I was very curious about how my whole stay would be, especially how my average day would be organised. So from personal experience I think it is good if you are informed about this before starting your trip because it allows you to feel more relaxed. I went to Romania to take part in a journalism placement so I will describe my daily life for this project.

I would get up at about 8 each morning. After washing I had breakfast which my host family would leave in the fridge or on the table. My host parents had always left the house by the time I got up as they had to be at work quite early.

I would arrive at the Projects Abroad office at 9am which is in the old area of Brasov. This office is also the working area for journalism volunteers because the placement is writing for the Brasov Visitor which is a magazine set up by Projects Abroad. The working day was from 9am until 5pm with a break for lunch a midday when we would head out for some cheap, tasty street food. During the working day I would find something of interest to write about connected to either Romania or Brasov and would then conduct research on the internet or by interviewing local people before writing up the article.

In the evenings my host family would prepare a meal for me which was served between 6 and 7pm. This was a good time to get some contact with the family, although we always ate separately from them.

After dinner I would either write postcards, read a book, or go to a concert or club. Most often I would meet up with other volunteers in the old area of Brasov and go to a bar or café. Often there were interesting festivals to go to.

At weekends I would visit the countryside and beautiful villages around Brasov, where you can discover the traditional Romanian lifestyle with horse drawn wagons instead of cars. Sometimes I would venture further from Brasov and experience more Romanian culture.
