Our Journalism Placements in Romania
The Brasov Visitor
The Brasov Visitor is a monthly English-language magazine which was set up by experienced Romanian journalist Catalin Badea-Gheracostea in 2002. All the articles are researched and written by Projects Abroad volunteers, who are also responsible for designing the layout. They write on a range of topics including their impressions of Romania and Brasov, Romanian traditions and culture, various reviews including music, literature, sports, and restaurants, and interviews with influential local people such as politicians. The editing, photography and publishing of the magazine are carried out by experienced Romanian staff, however if you are especially interested in any of these aspects of journalism you are welcome to get involved.
The Brasov Visitor has an office in the old centre of Brasov, in a centuries old house. Volunteers are based here whilst planning, researching and writing up articles. Since the magazine is published monthly, the beginning of each month is spent planning the layout and content of the magazine, followed by researching material and then writing up articles. Towards the end of the month the main tasks are editing, publishing and distributing the magazine. Each volunteer is expected to work up to 8 hours per day from Monday to Friday, and it is important that the magazine is published to deadline.
This placement is a great way to really get involved with the local community whilst also providing an informative and interesting magazine, popular with both locals and tourists. This could be an invaluable opportunity for you to learn more about journalism, not to mention enhance the impact of your CV or portfolio!
