I can barely remember now what my first impressions of Romania were, mostly because after seven months of living there, it’s now a place I feel just as patriotic to as I do to my native New Zealand..

Having worked in a book shop for the most part of my gap year, I saw a month in a foreign land as a final adventure before starting university. I knew I wanted to go travelling but wasn't keen on aimlessly backpacking to the usual gap year haunts. So I decided on Eastern Europe; and Romania just seemed a little different. I hoped that working on the Brasov Visitor Journalism Project would enable me to gain journalistic experience, while being immersed in a culture totally different to my own. Yes I was terrified but I am so glad I pushed myself to do something I still, constantly, talk about six months down the line.

When I arrive at my host's house it is 6pm and I'm very tired. So I'm grateful for the hospitality. The following day I notice that everywhere I go people trouble themselves to make me feel good.
Romanian people seem to have a lot of time and they don't claim that everything works perfectly. I don't hear one word of complaint when I queue up for half an hour in front of the post office. The observer gets the impression that Romania is a country which wants to rise in international importance, but always with a smile, even if there a lot of set-backs.

Journalism volunteers in Romania are continuing to take the Projects Abroad newspaper The Brasov Visitor from strength to strength. The first edition appeared a little over two years ago and since then, as well as offering many budding journalists their first opportunity to see their names in print, the paper has provided a fascinating chronicle of changing life in Romania.

Romania is land full of experience, promise and opportunity. Please take it from me that the quaint town of Brasov where PA bases their volunteers will hold some of the best times of your life.

Romania is certainly not the first place that comes to mind when one is wondering where to go to get some journalistic experience, but for me it was definitely the best place.
